Bubblegum for your eyes.

From Media Molecule on Vimeo.

Hopefully these will be confusing your mum on TV in the near future, but in the meantime you can chuckle along with us online.

All the ads (excluding the intros and outros, natch) were made using the game tools that come in the box. It was an interesting experience, because each level had to played through and acted, rather than animated. It feels like we did a thousand takes. At some point in the next few days we will try to get the actual levels online so you can play them yourselves.

A big thanks to Jae, Jamie and Trudi at TBWA. To Mark and Tom Perrett, Cyriak and Joji at Nexus. To Nick at Sony. THANKS!

KOOL!

cant wait to see it on TV!!!

The_Armo | November 7th

These levels look awesome! And MM do you think you could in the near future put out expansions to the syoty mode? Like three new levels plus new items. I’d buy that for 8 or 9 bucks. Just an idea, And by the way your game is amazing thank you for making it, I’ve been following it since GDC 07 :) )

LBP'sBiggestFan | November 7th

Awesome! :D

Jonathan | November 7th

Crazy stuff.

Getting up speed on a mullett! Mental.

You lot need to get out more!

They were great. Not sure about the Brian Blessed-type ending, but the levels are brilliant.

Sean | November 7th

Much better with the communication and location of where you are notifying us!!! Thanks!!! Keep up the great work!! love the new costumes!! though we were supposed to get the T-shirt as well, now the intent is to charge for it? Lets rethink that shall we?
Oh and where and when is the soundtrack going to be available?
Or should I just hunt around the net? I have most of em playing back in a browser at work ;)

technothemage | November 7th

Love the levels!! and want to play them!! ;)
I wonder what Janice thinks? heh heh

technothemage | November 7th

Too awesome for words.

Great ads :)

BTW am I the only person having problems accessing the new outfits I bought yesterday? I have a pre launch recalled copy of the game, I don’t know if that’s messing it up :/

Redswipe | November 7th

Fun ad campaign, love the tag line. Play with everyTHING~!

Lokno | November 7th

YESS!!!

I love these two commercials! I want to see them on TV that’d be epic!

I finally got to play the darn thing, and all i can say is wow.
Just…wow.
I’m officially wowed.

Peder landsverk | November 7th

Omg Donnie! Haha! I loove them both are hilarious!!

Mooshywooshy | November 7th

Hey Jim,
I’m very disappointed that Sony America hasn’t done any TV marketing/advertising for this game whatsoever. The game has been out for about 2 weeks in the US and SCEA hasn’t aired one single ad TV or online for the game while they’ve been running multiple ads for Resistance 2 and Motorstorm 2. Could you guys do anything at all to talk some sense into SCEA and get them to start marketing the game properly, or was the delay for the game the reason why they’re not marketing the game anymore.

gbovo | November 7th

I’m pretty heart broken at the situation to be honest.

gbovo | November 7th

these are awesome. I thought the Janice one was very funny.

ALZim | November 8th

Is it just me, or does the first guy sound like the guy that does the You Suck at Photoshop videos?

His quirkyness is really funny.

Steven | November 8th

Haha, that Janice level sounds like the guy from “You Suck At Photoshop” on YouTube… love it. Not as good as the Murray level though, but I love Flight of the Conchords… so that was always going to be my fave! :D

Jazz Perry | November 8th

@ Redswipe – i have the same problem. downloaded and installed fine but not showing in the pre-recalled game. rented an offical release copy and they work just fine, maybe i’ll ‘accidentally’ give blockbusters the wrong copy back :) . we’re being punished for loving and wanting this game too much :( emailed MM about it, no reply :(

also, i’ve just spent the best part of 30hrs creating a 95% thermometer full level and it won’t publish it. to check i created a smaller level using the first part and that published fine. also, why is it that when the servers are being troublesome i have to sign-out of PSN to play the games on my moon?? that seems a bit weird seeing as the levels are on my harddrive!!

oh, and charging £4 for a week one t-shirt sucks! bad MM, bad.

Btw… i’m missing the “ICE Element” in the game… where is the ice element ?

pHiL | November 8th

The Janice planet is so funny :) Cool that you also publish these levels.

yogh_wayne | November 8th

Brilliance ………… Cocky and Smart ……. touch of sting . So Bloody Playful.

Leif Ostlund | November 8th

Awesome, I hope you guys continue to improve the online experience (no lag) and added features.

Thanks

The_Icon | November 8th

i think its realy funny it makes people realy think outside the box and for people how don’t know about the game it shows them the things you can do. realy good ads. also i would like to see add ons besides costumes like water or gameplay addons more things for the pshics water would be nice. and i was looking about one day and remmeber ice what happened to ice its gone?

Matt | November 9th

Those were hilarious. “This is her friend Molly, and she just dies,” had me almost on the floor.

Taylour | November 9th

Great job on the ads and while showing off how light-hearted people can take the level creator. Way to stay awesome!

-DirtyData

DirtyData | November 9th

The Janice level was LOL
I must make a Paula’s level….

Ministro | November 9th

I like those ads, I hope I get to see them on the TV as I have yet to see any LBP ads other than the 4Music ones.

I hope LBP can get YouTube support. That would be win-win for EVERYONE!!

I wish there were user created levels available so far that look as fun / creative as those. Why are they not available to play?

Pete Ardus | November 9th

That is a low-Blow.

Read you will see what I mean:

Jason | November 9th

when are you going to fix the score board mine been reading zero zero zero since launch and ive got probably 25-40 hrs of play and no score wtf please fix that id like to know where i stand or is the scoreboard just for looks?

gmk218 | November 10th

I don’t think these will be effective ads. Seems like something you’d expect advertising a product thats already popular. The intro to LBP should be made into an ad.

Nick | November 10th

sad smiley face.

been trying for three days now to publish my new level. no joy.
also my play/create/share scores never get updated, still 0 0 0
and what’s with the moderators going crazy removing soo many levels??

this all coincides with the server upgrades the other day.

I played the beta for days and the levels people created were fantastic. I created 2 mediocre levels and uploaded them, i had dozens of people playing my levels and got decent feedback.

I’ve been playing the retail version for a week or so now and have tweaked my levels (because of bugs in the beta) and republished them. In about the same time frame but with (i guess) many more people online i find that only 1 person has actually played one of my two levels.

So how exactly do my levels get viewed and played by people? They’re buried within hundreds of trophy whoring and god awful spoofing levels. It seems to me that when a level is published it appears at the front page and moves slowly backwards. With i suspect 10s (if not 100s) of thousands of levels now published why should we spend hours crafting a level for it to only be seen by one person before dissapearing never to be seen again?

I’ve given up creating levels and gone back to 100%-ing the story mode in the hope that some better system for rating is implemented soon before we all give up hope.

Shaun | November 10th

do this levels realy exist???
because i want to play them .

woutomaat(psn) | November 10th

Fantastic guys! well done. love the game it is everything i expected. please keep add ons and new levels the same as the costumes on the store though ( some you have to buy, but some are also free )

John | November 10th

hi Shaun, as of today i have officially given up creating levels. i agree with you, what really is the point anymore? the beta was fantastic, levels loaded, people played them and rated them. now. nada! i, like you, tweaked my beta created ones and reuploaded to see what, 6 people tops have played them.

i’ve just spent the last 4 days trying to upload a new big 95% one with zero luck, it starts to upload, streams the data to the servers then hits me with a ‘try again later’ message, sorry MM, but later turned into too late. 18 months i waited for this game, now i can only think of two words, being fail and epic.

this evening i deleted my save files. LBP is turning out to be more trouble than it’s worth. i mean, i can’t even delete the uploaded photos that have borked. how could the devs have missed something so obvious as a delete option?

I agree.

You can’t even find some of my published levels if you search for them! :(

Mooshywooshy | November 7th

@Mooshywooshy
I’ve seen a commercial for LBP in America on G4TV I think. So there ARE commercials for it. Just keep waiting and watching :)

L33tSpeak | November 11th

Mobiletone, i cant help but feel that describing LBP as an ‘epic fail’ is a slight overeaction on your part about the situation. i admit that being in your posisition i would be a bit miffed about not many people playing the level but in no way would that affect my overall view on the game, what about the single player? the online? the fun? its amazing.

give the devs time to release some updates and hear what people, like you, have to say so they can fix it. Mm seem like a very dedicated team so just give them time.

simply best game adverts of all time, funniest thing ever! :D

slayer544 | November 11th

@ Jazz Perry

I discovered that my problem (and I suspect yours) is that my pre launch copy was a US one (I’m in the UK) which is why the downloadable content wont work. My Play, Share Create scores are also always zero which I suspect is for the same reason.

BTW I agree something needs to be done about getting decent levels played and all the crappy trophy winning ones out. Maybe Mediamolecule could add another section where they have a world covered in recommended levels which are changed every week?

Redswipe | November 11th

Mm, PLEASE can we have the Toro (Sony Cat) costume in Europe? I’m a huge Doko Demo Issyo fan, and if you’ve already made the costume, why not let us have it? I’ll pay whatever you want!

Stephen R Gibson | November 11th

These need to be put online! I want to ride the Metal Mullet!

Also, the Moods of Norway level is pretty awesome. I don’t think that’s anything you had a hand in, but they really made a great little level with some style, humor, and an albiet very slow tractor.

astronautcowboy3 | November 11th

I would like to play this level but really want to play littlebigcolossus when is it going to be published ?

scot | November 11th

Congrats on your #2 debut in the UK, guess I was wrong about the ads? :)

Nick | November 11th

Awesome ads, although I still prefer the french versions for their suitingly more “natural” voices. :P

Anyway, I’ll add my voice to the demand for a european release of the Toro costume from Mainichi Issho! =^__^= I’ve been using it since day one as my european PSN avatar (as it is officially available as a european avatar) so I don’t feel Toro should be a japanese exclusive and, yes, I’d be ready to pay bucks for that costume! XD

AoNekoAmaru | November 11th

please sort the servers out properly before you worry about any of this stuff! Ever since ive had the game ive been having a bit of trouble getting online .. i dont know why but it seems when i restart my ps3 it sorts itself out .. i also find that online lags quite alot and other people that i know say the same thing .. just some minor tweaks would be brilliant! Also some more costumes would be pretty cool! Thanks for making such a great game though !

@ slayer544 – it’s not just the fact my levels are not played/found, i have a whole bunch of issues with this title. major one being not being able to upload big levels i’ve created (please try later), levels being randomly deleted, having to reboot the game/console due to copy/move freezes, having to log off from PSN to play games saved on my moon, the horrible lag while playing online with others, the inability to delete online profile photos, score never updating… etc etc

it stopped being fun very quickly.

Janice’s heart could have been made of the Ice Hazard, instead of Electricity, had we had one. . . hint hint hint.

Pumapayam | November 11th

@ pHiL

To add to my sarcastic response, the Ice element/hazard was removed. I am still searching for a reason though.

Pumapayam | November 11th

Come on MM, talk to us! After the game was delayed you said there was a lot of exciting stuff to come on the blog. Where is it? Why have the blog updates dried up since the game came out? What’s going on with the Play/Create/Share scores in the game? Will there be improved filtering/sorting options soon? Are we likely to see online Create before Christmas?

If you could just drop a few hints about the future of the game it would be great. Don’t ignore your early adopters!

Peter Molyneux | November 11th

mobiletone, as i said can definatly understand your situation, i am just putting finishing touches to a level i have made and hope i too wont have the same problem, just describing LBP as an epic fail is ridiculous. an epic fail game is one like haze and belive LBP is more polished, fun and so much better than that…

i think time will tell with this, future updates should sort the problems out, dont think Mm would leave something like that just taking them a while to sort out the lag and their servers i think…

slayer544 | November 12th

When will you acknowledge all the requests for a patch to 1080i/p? Looking at this playstation forum, it would appear that there are alot of people that would love to buy this game but refuse to fork out $60.00 to only be able to play in SD 480p (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=1543693&view=by_date_ascending&page=1)

I personally, was VERY disappointed when I found out that this game would not support 1080i and buying a new TV is not an option (the tv isn’t even 2 years old!). Therefore, I left the game on the store shelf.

Many other developers have released game patches to fix the 1080i issue (Resistance 2 for example) with their games, so come on and at least acknowledge these requests with some type of response.

Will you or will you not patch this game? It’s a simple question, yet you have so far refused to answer!

John | November 13th

Come on guys, get the online act together!

The_Icon | November 13th

@John, What is wrong with 720P…?

Mads | November 13th

Is there a chance that there could ever be any WWE sackboys? That would be awesome. Sack Hardy or maybe Vince SackMahon.

shindol | November 14th

The_Icon: alot of ps3 owners have HDTV’s (some less than 2 years old) that only do 480p or 1080i, therefore, when developers only code for 720p, the ps3 downrezes the game to 480p which looks like crap instead of upscaling to 1080i like the xbox 360 does. The 360 has a built in scaler that does this for you, however, the ps3 didn’t do that, BUT made a software scaler that the developers can use to scale the game up. Media Molecule failed to do this, thus for us that don’t have TV’s that support 720p, the game will play in 480p.

john | November 14th

Can anyone tell me where i can buy the littlebigplanet signature series guide in the UK ive looked at game.co.uk but they dont have any

mjp333 | November 15th

hey all, try out my new level, its the beginning of a xmas trilogy! search “the grinch whoville christmas” and its the one created by housequake! or add me on psn – HouseQuake

HouseQuake | November 16th

Was that Janice level based off the “You Suck at Photoshop” series on Youtube?

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=VXeZ0s8DXZ0

As really does seem like it.

Cooper | November 16th

Still waiting on the 1080i patch before I buy this game… when is it coming – or is it coming?

@John: 1080i/p TVs accept 720p signals. I have a 1080p TV and LittleBigPlanet looks totally awesome, even if it only uses 720p and not 1080i/p. You only have to play it in SD if you have an SD TV, and if that’s the case, you couldn’t care less about 1080i/p as your TV wouldn’t support it anyway.

So, honestly, I don’t see what the problem is.

@MediaMolecule: What’s up with moderation of The Azure Palace? that level was one of the finest!

Inzoum | November 16th

dear MM, what do you have to say on the fact Playr TV just showed ICO, Sonic the Hedgehog and Gradius as examples of levels you can create and upload with LBP?? how would you feel if somebody made a LBP level and character mods for Unreal Tournament? thoughts please.

ps: i sold LBP on friday and bought Valkyria Chronicles with the money, a game that does exactly what it’s supposed to.

pps: thanks for not bothering to answer ANY of my many emails. you guys suck.

A other low-Blow:

Apparently Sony Removed Azure Palace
http://kotaku.com/5089481/lbp-moderation-remains-inscrutable-unaccountable

Jason | November 16th

I have the same issues as you all with the play share create score still at 0. I spent a week putting together a level to share with everyone and could not find it posted anywhere. I got lucky that a few of the folks on my player list went in and gave it a play, rated it, and a few of them hearted it because they enjoyed it. No change to my score though.

To be truthful, I didn’t get the game for a score though. I got the game to make levels and play other peoples. I keep getting the same old stuff coming up though. :( Hopefully they will fix it soon.

BTW, if anyone wants to check out my games search for Bad_Calvin or “Horror”.
You should perhaps see the hockey mask. :)

Bad_calvin | November 17th

I hate to sound like a beggar but it is exactly what you made us – the 1080i TV owners – do.

Please acknowledge our request and release a patch that supports our TV.
Or at least tell that you are working on it. It is not fair to us that we purchase the PS3 solely for enjoying this masterpiece creation and then find out that we are only playing it in very annoying SD visuals!

Please media molecule address us with your response regarding this issue!

Ebrahim | November 17th

Please sort out the moderation problems. I cant believe The Azure Palace was removed. That’s completely insane :/

I am a huge fan of the game. I spent 2 weeks in the beta and paid over $100 for a pre release copy but I am seriously p****d off right now with the game if this problem isnt sorted out.

Redswipe | November 17th

Played the beta, loved it!

But since release the rating system, the search engine, the moderation issues and the mountain of ‘trophy levels’ and ‘please heart me and i’ll heart you god awful levels’ has made me put the game back on the shelf.

I really hope it’s fixed soon because another week like last week and like a lot of people we’ll be giving up on the game. What’s the point in spending days creating a level to have nobody play it because the ‘cools level’ feature just doesn’t work.

I’d like to challenge Media Molecule staff to create a level right now and get people to play it without relying on PSN friends, republishing or internet advertising to get plays.

In fact MM representatives over at the US forums even actively recommended those methods to get plays, which just proves the games rating system does not work!

I appreciate fixes take time, but unless you let the community know the fixes are coming it may be too late.

Shaun | November 18th

Thanks, MediaMolecule for putting Azure Palace Back-Up.

Jason | November 19th

Bubblegum for your eyes, eh? There’s something about having the words “bubblegum” and “eyes” in the same sentence, that sends a cold shiver down my spine. Yeeowch!

Very cool ads, nonetheless. It would be even more awesome if those levels were released for people to download and play. A playable ad, what a concept!

DeeK | November 19th

@Inzoum

The TVs he is talking about that support 480p/1080i will not accept a 720p signal (unlike newer models that support 1080i/p). This is typeically of the HD CRT models from a few years back. Since the TV will not accept it, it’s up to the device sending the signal to convert it to 1080i first, or it displays as 480p – the PS3 does not convert it first.

So as you put it, yes you don’t understand what the problem is, but thankfully those people with the problem do.

Again, MM please patch this game to support 1080i. Thank you.

I know the game has been released and all, but please keep posting on the blog to keep us entertained… or something.

I’ve noticed that since the game finally reached everyone, there’s been no more additions to the blog
Any point keeping the blog? How about making a LBP forum instead?
Great game, but getting boring now. Latest costume downloads guys? I’m not buying those, I could just slap on a coloured sticker if I wanted a yellow sackboy, and i’ve got the other colours.

Hi MM,

As the person above me asked any chance of getting patch notes?

Also an update on what you guys are doing would be fab :)

Perhaps a sneaky peak of how the online create mode is coming along?

Cheers

TheRook21 | November 21st

I just feel the need to respond to those complaining about bad levels in the game. This game is almost entirely user moderated. My understanding is that levels that get lots of hearts and four or five star ratings will float to the top, and levels that get one and two star ratings will in theory fall down the rankings.

Your best bet when it comes to bad levels is to make sure to rank them as bad levels. Or ignore them. The fact is you should never have expected a game with this many people playing to not have quite a few stinkers. Luckily the trophy/heart-me levels are usually very easy to find and thus avoid if you are so inclined.

I’m not really disagreeing with the fact that finding levels is broken right now. I think MM is finding that the system that worked adequately in beta, just doesn’t work when you have 85,000 levels uploaded. That said if you spend time looking through all the levels in the game you will still find cool stuff. The other day I found some absolutely amazing levels and a bunch more that weren’t half-bad. Actually the improvement in quality to what I was seeing a week ago was pretty notable.

My advice, go into the game with the attitude of an explorer. Sometimes you’ll find cool levels. And, yes, sometimes you will find crap. My other advice, be brutal. When you find a bad level give it one star. Don’t be nice. This system will only work if everyone is honest when it comes to star ratings. And even so it will take time to work. The more time that passes the more people will play the levels and rank them, and the more people ranking levels the better the game’s filtering system will work.

Ideas I’d like to see implemented would be stuff like being able to filter out levels that have been played, say, over 100 times and rated only one or two stars. Actually being able to see the avg star rating of any given level would be nice. Obviously a better search function would be nice. But less obviously I think there should be a list option for viewing levels instead of the planet view, which looks nice but can be tough to navigate…especially if you want to find something. And there should be tons of filters available. Star rating, number of times played, alphabetical, number of hearts, ratio of hearts to times played, number of comments received, etc.

I think MM is worried that if they do this things will be even worse for new levels. After all if your level hasn’t been played it won’t show up with any of those filters really. The solution to this is to continue having a main page just like there is now where players can get a random sampling of levels. By making this the default I’m pretty sure levels would still get a fair amount of attention. Then in a secondary screen you could have the filtered list for those who want to find a good level quickly.

I think you guys should publish these levels. :)

Killian | November 23rd

Whatever happened to the levels designed in the NYC Parsons design contest? I remember hearing that they were supposed to be available once the full game was released. I can’t find anything about them so far.

Leave MM alone people!!! They are probably really busy at the moment keeping the servers up and working on updates, give them a break, after all the have just created the best game EVER in an extremely short amount of time! Oh and by the way I have created a tribute level for Heavy Metal Mullet Planet! Just search that and it should come up.=]

Ben Smith | November 28th

Hey MM. This is a great game no doubt, but there’s a huge problem with the online system which i’m sure you’re aware of. The search engine just plain blows. I hear of these great online levels on blogs here and there, but I can’t successfully find them using your search tool. It’s actually completely pointless. And please, could you throw in a “most hearted” list, or just plain “featured this week” kind of list? I’m tired of going through endless dribble just to get to a well built level.

I’d like to remind you that you showed off an earlier version of the game with this kind of system built in. There are videos all around the net. It seems so much more effective. Otherwise, I honestly can’t stand going online.

Thanks.
