Mm Picks

Hi all and welcome to another Mm Picks. For those of you who are new here, Mm Picks are a selection a levels picked by Mm staff. These are the levels we have been impressed with this week.

So off we go! (In no particular order…)

Tender Buttes 5 Stars By TangoCharlieESQ

Wonderfully cute level set in Bandit Town settings. Absolutley tonnes of gameplay and theres even replayability (try not being evil). Hearted to the max!

Scary Factory Overlooking the small village 5 Stars By geosautus

Ole is back with another outstanding level. Set mostly in a factory this level has great ideas and a superb visual style. It also uses the Paintinator and the Paintinator Switches in really original ways. The only critism we could scrape together was that it needs better camera zones, apart from that, Brilliant!

EarthMusic&Rust 5 Stars By EarthMusic

This level has a great puzzle/adventure feel to it. Basically, you are trying to get out of a factory by finding and activating switches which turn on lights, move things, etc. The factory itself has so much detail it really feels like a real factory. Set aside atleast 20 minutes for this one as you will get stuck, but it’s well worth the perseverance.

How Not To Make A level 3 Stars By MalteseAssassin

So so true. This level shows how to not build things in LittleBigPlanet. If you are serious about making great levels then play this. Great idea, hope to see more levels like this in the future.

How Not To Make A level

Anti-Color (and also ‘Re-Color’) 5 Stars By ZX497

These would have been hard to miss if you were looking at the highest rated page on the right days. He’s found an exploit in the renderer that lets him make everything look like line drawings and then concentrated on making some unique and interesting shaped platforms that deliver some great gameplay.

Re-Color adds paintinator action and a retrogaming feel with a cool introduction screen and a colorful boss.

Space station 42 4 Stars By Santana03

Drifting through the dark void of space, Space Station 42 is falling apart. With the power generators on the fritz, be prepared for gravity based gameplay as you make your way for the escape pods. This is one of the most clever uses of physics to be seen thus far in LittleBigPlanet.

Little Big Music Store 4 Stars By DoctorGalactic.

This is a realistic looking shop full of guitar stuff, so its close to my own heart. Scramble over guitars, amps and keyboards to collect bubbles and prizes. I found this via Candyjunky’s hearted list.

Little Big Music Store

paint shop 3 Stars By NemesisNinja

For the creators out there, if you wanted more solid colored stickers, here you go! Nicely arranged in prize bubbles so you can browse and collect what you want.

Fancy Font Time! 3 Stars By saeryph

Again for creators, a calligraphic 3D alphabet you can collect as individual letters. It’s really great seeing creators helping each other like this. A little tip for the Creator, try also giving away cookie cutter shapes of the letter, then other creators can create their own letters and edit them.

Oh, and if you’re finding these hard to find, search for ‘LittleXim’ (that’s us) and look at out Hearted Levels. In there you’ll find all these levels and more and maybe even a little preview of next weeks Mm Picks.

Until next week, byeeee.

How not to make a level was kinda funny :D
any news on what will be out with the 23rd PS store update? any new patches/updates?
sorry I already asked before but I just thought you might’ve changed your mind.
Thanks, bye.

Omar | January 12th

Some great levels as always! Disapointed that one of mine still hasnt made it up to the almighty Mm website. If your looking for some levels to play search Leather-Monkeys! *glares at comment whilst grinning*

Leather-Monkeys | January 12th

Check out my level ‘The Ballad of Meat Monkey’ by kung_fu_russ

It took me ages, it’s half decent, contains lots of characters, and no bugger has played it.

kung_fu_russ | January 12th

Thanks again for these lists – really nice to be able to find some cool levels that haven’t yet made it to the front pages in the game =)

Mister_Bump | January 12th

Mh, the hearting the levels is a nice touch but the ingame list of LittleXim’s levels is never bigger than say ten items. Is it possible to view you full hearted list?

besttof | January 12th

Scary factory overlooking the small village and how not to make a level are epic.
And Anti-color has an awesome look, but repetetive.
It wins the internet by originality.

What so nice levels,
great ambiance for the factory,
i like the tim burton style too

Take a look to my Maya’s level for the horrible mechanical machine and the Falls,
and Sackstelvania Vampire for the Tim Burton Ambiance.
I’m also creating a so outstanding pinball level, but in beta for now ( maybe MM staff can visit it, even it’s locked? ).
ID : URBANDEVILL.

Hope to see more amazing level, and stuff in the Store… soooo empty this week…
See ya soon! i realllly love that game !!

I thought I had saved the first person in Tender Buttes, but I guess I was too late because he died anyway. :P So sad, since he was allergic to death.

Bring us FFVII!!!….Oh well, great levels, I’ve been working hard on a Metal Slug themed level…I’ll let you know when it’s finished to see if you like it. My goal is to make it as good as a downloaded one, that’s why I’m reverse engeneering the MGS vehicles and objects you gave us with the pack…^__^.

Another thought -

Why are you telling us your ‘featured levels’ on a website? Surely there should be a ‘featured levels’ option in the in-game search?!?

kung_fu_russ | January 13th

Some quick replies:

Omar – You’ll know soon enough ;)

Leather-Monkeys – I’ll check it out tomorrow :)

kung_fu_russ – Sounds interesting, I’ll play that too.

besttof – Press R1 to page through all our Hearted Levels.

Urban Angel – Send LittleXim a key and we’ll have a looksie.

Roto13 – You gotta pull him out of the pit!

Daimomaru – Let us know when it’s done, we love Metal Slug!

kung_fu_russ – Check your InfoMoon! (but they appear here first)

MarkS | January 13th

Tender Buttes was great, I loved the allergy line.
Re-Color and Anti-Color were nice too. I don’t think the silhouette style is ever going to get old.

Also, just wondering if there were any plans for the Front View from Create Mode to be made usable in published levels? I think some of the silhouette levels, among others, could really benefit from the option.

besttof: If you go to the published levels page on LittleXim’s planet (or anyone’s planet for that matter) and press R1, it should take you to the hearted levels pages, and you can keep pressing R1 to get to the hearted creators.

kung_fu_russ: There’s some featured levels on the News page of the Info Moon, I think it’s supposed to be updated every month.

Dan | January 13th

Another great selection

kung_fu_russ-featured levels are also in the news section in the game
—————————————————————————————————-
try my level the bank robbery psn brnxblze would like any feedback
good or bad thanks

brnxblze | January 13th

@MarkS: I did pull him out of the pit!

Side note, I heard the Anti-Color level was actually taken down for a bit. Was that to make sure the glitch wasn’t going to make everyone’s PS3s explode?

Love love LOVE The Scary Factory overlooking the Small Village!
Geosautus is too awesome!

Kakemoms | January 13th

Leather-Monkeys – We’ve already hearted your Mullet Planet level (nice) so people playing our Hearted levels will find you.

kung_fu_russ – LOLOLOLOL Loved the Meat Monkey, such detail on the bacon (if I’m not mistakon). I was expecting something to chase me at the end though.

MarkS | January 13th

great thanks! ill definately check them out as soon as the save feature is fixed. :)

adsci | January 13th

You should check out EarthMusic&Slime as well which is brilliant

Redswipe | January 13th

whenever I complete the metal gear solid pack ( only possible to acsess levels through the ps store) and any levels I create with content from the metal gear pack they vanish and all save data is lost to do with metal gear whenever I leave little big planet. Help!

lilstefsta | January 13th

Great levels, I love the concept of Anti-colour still scratching my head on the how to create that unique look. Well done eveyone. Fingers crossed you we get to try out my levels especially the Secret car garage level..

Covertaction | January 13th

To “LittleXim”

I have Publish my Pinball level yesterday night, so you can see it
ID : URBANDEVILL
LEVEL : Ultimate pinball experience.
i will upload a youtube video soon, because i use many lights…
but flares and blur, and smokes are not rendered in “ingame shot”… :/
See ya soon !!

Oh, well if Leather-Monkey can offer up his level for judgment, then I’ll hop on that bandwagon. :) (BTW, Leather-Monkey, I like your work).

Mine is called Abandon Starship! and my user name is Capt-Nixon . Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I tried to do something different with this one; almost the entire level is a moving platform. You’ll see what I mean.

Now I’m going to have to go home and play all these cool levels.

Chris | January 13th

check out my factory-level. ”adventure trough the evil factory”.
Spent a lot of time trying to always make details move around you in the level. its a living factory, after all.

Thanks for playing my level, Marks.

Nice to know that a member of the LBP team has seen it. I’m working on a new one – ‘Freddy Mercury’s Treehouse’

kung_fu_russ | January 13th

Some amazing levels shown here :)

Perhaps MM could gather some of the best creators and make a tutorial showing how these brilliant minds create their levels? How they plan it all etc. I can’t even make an elevator. It always ends at the wrong end of the shaft…

Wow, LittleXim are YOU GUYS! :D

You left me a pic on my level “Good, bad & EVIL”!

I’m sooo happy to know you played it :) , hope you enjoyed playing it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Now I REALLY have to get going on the next one, whatever it will be! :D

Zaphloo | January 13th

Interesting, maybe you guys should add user search and also be able to subscribe to accounts (rather than friend them) so you can be alerted when they publish a new level/heart one. Much like a friend, but not :) Probably beat creating an empty level just so we can find you!

Daniel | January 14th

Some more quick replies.

Urban Angel – WOW! Amazing levels, I’ve sent you an email via PSN.

Daniel – Sounds like a good idea.

kung_fu_russ – Cool name.

Mnniska – Played it, looks nice but gameplay needs to be tuned slightly, it was very hard :(

Chris – Abandon Starship was cool, love the idea of the whole level moving. I was expecting to land on an alien planet though.

lilstefsta – Delete some things from your popit (go into create and start deleting the stuff you don’t need. When you go back to the Pod, check that there is the little sackboy running animation, this shows that the game is saving. Sorry about that, it will be fixed.

MarkS | January 14th

Some great levels there – the flexibility of what can be achieved with LittleBigPlanets creation tool never ceases to astound.

Can I plug my levels now….?!?!?

I have a few up, but please play:

- ‘The Mountain’ – A (I like to think) fun little adventure over…well…a mountain obviously.

- ‘The Ocean’ – see above but set on…well…an ocean obviously!!

I spend a lot of time on them and, for the most part, am pretty pleased with the results. Would love some more people to play them though and get some feedback to help me with my next project.

Just search for ‘chubster2010′

Keep up the good work Media Molecule peeps!

Chubster2010 | January 14th

Played through the levels, a great selection MM. :)

Nice to geosautus is back creating levels, Scary Factory overlooking the small village is awesome, one of the best Paintinator levels I’ve seen. I loved playing through EarthMusic&Rust too, althoguh it took me a while to work out what to do most of the time, but that was half the fun of it. :)

Anyway, Mark, don’t suppose you would care to try out one of my levels if you get the time? MY username is Nuclearfish and the level is called ‘The Spiralizer’. It’s a survival mini-game where you have to stay inside a spinning maze as long as possible.

Nuclearfish | January 14th

Please give us a date for the patch…I cant wait any longer!!I Want to make a level but i want to do it smoothly…So iam waiting this patch

Minas | January 14th

Nuclearfish – Have I got a surprise for you :) All I can say is watch this space!

MarkS | January 14th

Hi, You should check out a level called Jack McSetback & the Spiky Stone of Doom. By a guy called Wyth. Very good. Now time to get started on my A Team level.
Cheers MM

bap10 | January 14th

”Mnniska – Played it, looks nice but gameplay needs to be tuned slightly, it was very hard :(

ive maked the hardest parts easier now (the iceslide, the guitar-band and when you have to jump over electric things)
Thanks for feedback 8]

when are you guys gonna release that weird little thing that controles light/dark and stuff? :D

(sorry for my english.blah blah)

Hey everyone, just finished my level. I made a youtube video and everything just so u can see it before you play it, so heres the details:
Username: RiGzZ
Level name: The LittleBig Quest
Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/rigzzzzzzzz
OR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e91xNbCadI&feature=channel_page

hearts and comments are much`appriciated, enjoy!

RiGzZ | January 15th

Any idea when the RPG expension pack comes out, your ‘Coming Soon’ page doesn’t have any release date ? I hope it’s before Christmas. I like the magical staff, the one that depending on what orb you pick up, it has that attack power. Ice is cool, the way it freezes the enemy and they shatter when you push them into something solid. The little gunny pack is neat to, the way you can carry extra items.

Oh wait, you don’t have a ‘Coming Soon’ page, because you don’t want us to know what’s around the corner and down the block a piece. That’s sad. My little sack friend is sad now. Not even the magical tree hat will put a smile back on their face.

TMeagher | January 15th

I played “The Scary Factory overlooking the small village” and boy was it awesome. It incorporated the Paintinator perfectly… I’ll try to check the other levels later.

@Tmeagher: …

Check out lbpcentral.com’s Showcase section (you have to be a member to access that section) for great levels! Honestly, there are some talented creators there. aer0blue was a member there before he got his levels showcased.

Thanks!

P.S. No, this is not copy/paste advertising… I just want you guys to find some great levels that are getting left in the dark. Happy gaddering!

Hi, any chance of a mention for our Little Big Planet Fantastical Crown competition as seen here: http://www.littlebigland.com/little-big-planet-competition/little-big-lands-fantastical-little-big-planet-crown-competition/

Sam Protagonist very kindly donated a Rare Prize Crown for our prize pot

what the heck man “Scary Factory Overlooking the small village” is the best user made level I’ve ever played, I think its perfect, there’s nothing wrong with the camera angles. I think the other levels posted have a lot more wrong with them

starblinky | January 16th

Wow, I forgot to check this blog recently and they are so many new updates! Thanks for the mini-plug for recommending you Razhotep’s Tomb by aer0blue back when it have only 300+ plays in an old entry. I’ve been checking LittleXim’s hearted list pretty often and it’s updated with new good levels pretty often, so check it out guys!

I’ve befriended ZX497 and his new level Bipolar Negatives is even more impressive, especially the boss battle. This time however, it doesn’t exploit any glitch! He also have a highscore competition on his SackThrow minigame level where the highest score get a prize, hinted with SotN. It’s time limited, so check it out soon.

EarthMusic’s levels are ALL brilliant! I’ve still yet to beat Slime and Agni after many tries! Rust is definitely the easier one(just slightly) and suitable to be his showcase level for now.

It’s really nice to see the many feedback/replies we’ve been getting from MM for LittleBigPlanet! Lastly, please check out my heart list sometimes for good levels that I’ve found. I could send LittleXim a list of good levels I’ve found but the list is WAY TOO LONG now. My own creations are only decent 3 stars average, but I’m still getting used to the tools and tricks. Besides, I’m constantly distracted to play the many brilliant levels out there. On top of that, factory-wrapped Fallout3, Prince of Persia, Cod:WaW and many other games are still waiting in line to get in my PS3 which have been occupied by LBP since early November. Teehee.

x3-power | January 16th

starblinky, he called the level ‘brilliant!’, but criticism is good! it means geo can improve his levels! :)

Played about half of these already, glad to know there is a Mm creator I can heart for easy access to these! Good idea!

Great work, will be polishing my next level to have some awesome gameplay, so watch this space! I’ll be up there one day! ;)

SUGGESTION

Can we get simple logic gates (AND, OR, etc)? I realise we can create them ourselves but surely it’s more efficient to have MM implemented ones.

Thanks

Shaun | January 16th

Awesome picks – now when are you going to update the ‘News’ section, so I don’t have to painstakingly search for these levels?

Toby | January 17th

Finally I get it, I hit R1 on the WORLD (not the menu) to find all your hearted levels.

iNiff | January 17th

Hi everyone, try my levels:
DEAD HILL and DEAD HILL 2(for unlock the 2 u must finish the first).
Is a creepy story in 2 levels, i work much on the atmosphere. I like the end so i hope u will finish dead hill and play dead hill 2.
The first is full of puzzle, the second have more action. There is the italian version too, called CITTA’ MALEDETTA and CITTA’ MALEDETTA 2.

tag psn: notteincubo

notteincubo | January 18th

Hey MarkS and LittleXim’s (and everybody else of course =D), checkout my Level: DinoMyte. Its a Dinosaur Level but I bet you will be suprised how some things might work (especially the 2. car part). I worked on it for months and it takes 10 minutes in a speedrun. Tell me what you think! My PSN is Mikasa_

Mikasa_ | January 18th

@Shaun: Agreed. I mean, on one hand it’s pretty easy to create simple gates. But as soon as you want to add more complex things, like, for example, a x30 OR-Gate (where 1 out of 30 switches has to be activated), you will either have to link up several ORs or you’ll have to make a huge, circle-like one. Either of them draws a lot of level space which could also be used for some more awesomeness.

You could just offer a switch-like thing which can be attached to one or several switches and which has got wires itself. By offering a bag of simple settings, you could then let users make their custom logic gates (like, for example, “If 3 out of 10 are active, activate xy”). Add a delay timer and we’ll be fine.

Can’t wait till you release a patch to solve those game saving issues. I’ve deleted every single community object, every level on my moon I don’t need (now, there’s about 5 levels, each of them ~50% filled), every costume I don’t need, every single community sticker and photo… so, by now, there are just 5 levels, ~7 costumes and ~20 self-made objects left, nothing else. And it still doesn’t save the changes I made to my levels – I do always have to put them online as sort of a backup.

Treas | January 18th

Hi again Mark, a quick request – do you think you could make a guideline post to moderation, something along the lines of your scoring one? I find the moderation rules in game to be more than a little vague and I’m never sure if I’m doing the right thing or wasting the moderators time. I mean, it obvious that stuff like 9/11 levels and anything with bad language etc need moderating, but the more borderline stuff is trickier. For example, should we be marking 360 hate/Wii hate levels? You know the drivel – where you get to blow up 360s for the ‘good’ of Sony etc – should these be marked or not?

BTW, if you have a moment, please check out my level, Caves of the Damned by MisterBump – it’s not up to the quality of some of these amazing levels, but I’m quite proud of it none the less ^^

Mister_Bump | January 18th

Those are all some really good levels. There’s this one I just played that really needs to go on this list. It was so cool I nearly pooped my pants. It had real working animated movies in it, and it was also one of the funniest levels I’ve played in the game. It’s called The Movies, the creator’s name is Teebonesy. I have NO idea how he did it, but it looks incredible..

beep-beep | January 19th

Hi Mark, can I draw Media Molecule`s attention to a fabulous level submitted to LittleBigLand this past week? It`s poetic, beautiful, disturbing and totally unique with a fantastic original soundtrack. Check it out here: http://www.littlebigland.com/little-big-planet-level/little-big-planet-levels-jan-2009/little-big-planet-level-torn-by-darkness/

The pictures really don`t do it justice, it has to be played to be experienced at it`s best – which brings me to a small complaint: why does the in-game camera not pick up on lights and gasses? I tried taking many more photos in game but these were the only 2 that captured more than just blackness

I second The Movies – genius level and very, very funny! Definitely one for the MM picks!

Mister_Bump | January 19th

Lolz cool! Looks like my level plugging sparked off a load of others… uh yeh sorry about that lol. Its great to see you guys really involved with the LBP community!
