April 2021 Newsletter
April 2021 Newsletter

Hi CoMmunity, and happy May! Yes, we know we’re a little late with this newsletter but we hope you can forgive us - there’s just so much good stuff happening in the Dreamiverse that we got distracted! (Okay, phew, excuses out of the way. On with the newsletter.)

April was another HUGE month in the Dreamiverse, headlined by our fantastic #AutisticaPlayJam, in partnership with Autistica. We saw so many amazing creations created throughout the month, and had Jake from the Autistica team pop by our stream to check out his top 5 6 creations! We also raised an amazing £650 for the charity themselves - thank you all so much. What else happened? SO much! From literal award-winning moments to new content from The Impsider, read on to catch up.

That image you see up top? It’s from the mind of Solid1156 and is called Natural Mystic. We caught up with Solid to find out a little more about the creative process behind creating this piece.

My goal was to make a scene that shows something lively but also at the same time tells something. It was particularly important to me that the viewer asks themselves and develops their own story into the picture. Immediately I knew that it must be a mystical creature, something unknown - but at the same time it should seem natural, as if it could really exist. For this picture I took most of the time for the composition and when I was done with it, I started to work out the details. I kept the color dark and matte to make it look more realistic. During the lighting I tried to emphasize the deer clearly and allow the man with the torch to look even smaller. When I made the fog there was a moment where I knew exactly, 'That's it! I should stop here'.

It's Raining MORE Trophies!

It's Raining MORE Trophies!

Not to sound too smug, but we’re pretty happy with this bit. Last month we were lucky enough to receive awards at both the SXSW Gaming Awards AND the BAFTA Games Awards! This month? We won Outstanding Technical Achievement at the DICE Awards and Innovate Ideas at The Dreamies! Thank you to you, the CoMmunity - Dreams wouldn’t be what it is without you, so these awards are as much yours as they are ours! <3

As we mentioned up top, April was all about our #AutisticaPlayJam! Thank you to everyone who took part, donated towards Autistica’s cause, or simply helped us spread the message in aid of World Autism Awareness Month! We partnered with Autistica to run the event, with Jake Mackey from the team joining us throughout the month of April of a couple of streams to guide our Dreamers with advice on how to get involved, as well as amplifying the message he and his team work to spread and support.

You can check out the creations that were brought to life, including Fragments by thyongamer and their team, by heading into DreamSurfing and checking the Autistica playlist.

Our very own John Beech got in to the CoMmunity Challenge scene this month with a template of his own! The usually-train-making designer published his Collectable Card Template and plenty of Dreamers have already gotten involved. Find the template on indreams here and create your own!

Meet TAPgiles!

Meet TAPgiles!

If you’re a creator in Dreams, chances are you know the name TAPGiles by now. Lovingly known as TAPPY-G by certain members of the Mm team, TAP has dedicated themselves to helping Dreamers with a slew of tutorials, Dreams documentation, countless bits of advice and so much more. But who are they? Let’s find out!

What do you like to do in the Dreamiverse?

Help people! I'm always looking around online for people in need of Dreams help, so I do a lot of answering questions through that. I also make tutorials and "daydreams" (short Twitter videos) showing how to make things in Dreams, so I create a lot of tech demos and prototypes trying out new ways of doing things for people to learn from.

If you could give another member of the CoMmunity a piece of advice for their time in Dreams, what would it be?
I'm going to speak to the creators out there, as that's kind of what I do... Take it slow.

With all the possibilities in Dreams it can be hard to know where to start and what to make. The in-game tutorials are perfect for that. You cannot save things out from them as new elements, so you can just play and try things out without feeling pressured to make it "good." And you're learning new things step by step, so stretch what you're learning and use it in different ways to see what's possible.

Once you've done the basic tutorials, start on tutorials for your areas of interest. Start making random stuff outside of the tutorials, getting used to creating in Dreams and picking up ideas along the way. Your first projects should be easy to make in Dreams. Make a 3D platformer, using the default puppets, or build using Mm's wonderful kits to practice just putting together a scene.

Watch tutorials from the many teachers on YouTube. (And if you like, I've got a ton you can check out. *winks to the camera*) As you make each project, push your limits a little more and apply something you learned from a tutorial in a new way.

Even if you have some grand vision already in mind to make in Dreams... expand your horizons bit by bit. Take things slow. Walk before you run. Don't be afraid to get a little help from the community--using assets from the Dreamiverse, collaborating with people, learning through videos and asking questions. And when you're ready, you'll be ready! Don't push too early and you won't get frustrated... You'll get there, in your own time. :D

What was the first thing you created in Dreams?
I was actually known by the PSN Supposer, in my pre-TAP days.

Electric Monk was the first asset I made and released; a little music track using half Mm loops, and a few instruments performed by myself. The second was for the winter jam, a simple mountain scene I called The Last Few Steps of Green. It was awesome, creating the sense of scale and moving things around from the camera view to make the composition. Sculpting was really the thing that got me super-hyped for Dreams before beta was a gleam in Mm's eye. And it was amazing to get my hands on it when the beta came around!

I know this wasn't what the question was, but I'd like to plug the favourite things I've made so far if that's cool? Remnants of Gear and Cog was made not too long after the mountain scene, and it took a lot longer to build though it was simpler in design. I even added some semi-procedural music in there! It was inspired by the robot designs in the Ghibli film Laputa, and it's the visual scene I'm most proud of.

Second is a music track I spent a few weeks on, called Fire Flight. It's over 7 minutes long, I made a visualiser for it, released it as remixable... but I'm super proud of how that turned out. DREAMS, Y'ALL!!

Favourite food, movie and song, in that order. GO!
I love a good lasagne. And I'm talking good lasagne. It's not just a sloppy mess. The mince isn't too chunky or too smooth. Just the right about of herbs added so they're barely detectable and just add to the flavour. Not easy to find a lasagne that's just right, but when you find one... Hold onto it and don't let it go. You may never get another chance...

As a (former?) writer I tend to enjoy stuff with good writing a whole lot more. After much deliberation, I think I'll have to go with The Fountain - the first film that really blew me away. Pretty artsy, a lot of metaphor going on in there. But at the core is a story about a man struggling to save his wife from cancer and a woman trying to say goodbye to her husband. A simple, touching story, but told in the most visually and musically and acting-ly exquisite way possible. Beautiful on so many levels -not least of which, that epic soundtrack! Not easy for some (in my experience most) people to get into, but if you get into it, it's going to be an amazing experience! Buckle up for some mind-blowing visuals and storytelling.

A close second is Your Name - best anime film ever made, in my opinion. But so many other films I could mention... (Seriously, I spent at least 20 minutes narrowing this down and writing and deleting other films over and over, so be grateful I stopped at 2!) XD

I listen to a lot of different kinds of music, but one that gets me every time is Tool's "10,000 Days." The rhythm, the bass, the meaning, the emotion in the vocals... It's the second of 3 songs written by Maynard (the vocalist) about his feelings over the loss of his mother and the events surrounding that. Headbanging through tears, my friend.

How can people find you in the Dreamiverse?
Just look up TAPgiles. And if you're feeling adventurous, look up Supposer for a look at my super old stuff too ;P

And wherever you find me, my DMs are always open for people looking for help with a problem, questions they have etc. If you want to find me elsewhere, best place to start is TAPgiles.com - it explains who I am, where you can find me, what I do, how you can support me, and how to get support from me.

Which creations are currently your Top 10 in Dreams?
The Snowgardens / The Watergardens
Cake Factory 2
Watering Day
City Pizza Delivery
Rabbit and Boy
Claustrofactory (Open Beta)
Frozen Frenzy
Delta Drift
And a quick mention of a couple of games I helped MasherButtons make... Horsey and Strike It Rich! The music is amazing, and the Masher Whimsy (tm) makes everything 200% better :P

Who’d you like to get to know in the Dreamiverse? We’ll ask them some questions for next month’s newsletter!
I'd like to hear from one of my tutorial buddies, Vince Kully. And while you're waiting for next month's newsletter, go watch his tutorials and like and subscribe! XD
