The Dreams Creator Beta

The Dreams Creator Beta

We know it's been a long wait, and we can't thank you enough for remaining patient and giving us the time we've needed to make the Dreams Creator Beta happen (it's so exciting to be able to write that!). The Dreams Creator Beta is live NOW for almost* everyone who receives this newsletter.

Not Dreaming yet? Your code should be waiting for you in your email inbox, or perhaps it found it's way in to your junk/spam folder! We can't wait to see what you create in the Dreamiverse and please connect with us on the feedback.indreams.me forums to report issues, give feedback and chat with other players.

Not caught up on all the news? Our blog has the information on what's available, how long it'll be available for and when we'll be opening it up to even MORE Dreamers!

If you aren't part of the Dreams Creator Beta right now, don't worry! We're less than TWO WEEKS away from our public sign-ups (kicking off on the 4th January), where we'll be welcoming many more people to the Dreamiverse!

Last YEAR In Dreams

Our Favourite 2018 Moments

You don't end a year without making a Best Of list and that's exactly what we're doing this month! We've had a HUGE 2018, and we can't believe it's gone by so fast. From performing a live gig with Dreams at E3, to our monthly streams, to the Dreams Creator Beta. This is a year we won't soon forget.

We've asked some Molecules to round up their best memories of this year, read them below!

Tom Dallaway's 3 OMG Moments

Tom Dallaway's 3 OMG Moments

OMG Dr Rendezvous was one of the E3 demo games!

OMG Abbie demoed Ferovium onstage at TGS!

OMG Demoing dreams at E3 with one of the Sony Japan bigwigs, I don't know Japanese and he didn't know English, we had a riot!

Kitty Power's Top 3!

Kitty Power's Top 3!

Hello Kittens! Here are my top 3!

First has to be when the team at Media Molecule asked me to come and work on the Dreams tutorials. I loved working on Tearaway so it was lovely to be able to come back.

Second was getting lots of positive feedback about the Beta versions of the tutorials, they have been very challenging to get right so that made it all worth it.

And finally, doing the Halloween Scream Stream in my latest Halloween look. Carving silly pumpkins in Dreams with the team was a hoot!

Anyway, Have a Merry Yuletide and a Happy New Year, and I’ll see you in the Dreamiverse, Kittens!

Dave's Gig of the Year

Dave's Gig of the Year

As an animator all of what we do is crafted before being played back later, in any medium. But to be in a band, on stage, 'performing' my work in real time, is an experience I'll never forget. It set a benchmark for what can be achieved not just in one form of art but also in a real-time collaboration alongside other disciplines. It makes me massively excited to think about future live shows using Dreams like this. So to be there playing that show, showing the world the start of something truly special and uniquely Mm, was one of the best moments not just in my career but of my life!

Pablo's Raft Race Recap

Pablo's Raft Race Recap

We didn't know what we were getting into. We hammered some wooden planks together and painted them with all the colours, strapped a few barrels on with hot glue, hanged golden stripes on the boom that would flutter in the air. Flag on the bow and flamingo air fan on the aft, we relied on John's finger math to keep all 6 of us buoyant!

We had a ground team ready to spray any walking foes who fired at us. We passed the Astronauts, who used a Moon as their propulsion. We passed the Romans, whose big guns weren't match of our colourful spirit. And we kept struggling with the Science vessel who finally passed us. But we didn't stop until the end and we finished the race in one piece. Now the raft lives forever in our hearts -and in our basement, ready for the next fight!

Abbie Heads Back to LBP

Abbie Heads Back to LBP

Christophe made us this amazing recreation of the opening garden level (and pod!) from LBP in Dreams. I think it really made what Dreams can do “click” for a lot of people. And tons of people who work at Mm were asking “is this Dreams?” which was hilarious...it’s magical that the tools keep surprising us!

Tom's first PAX, Our First Panel!

Tom's first PAX, Our First Panel!

PAX was amazing. It was my first PAX, and Media Molecule's first ever PAX Panel, as well as the first Dreams one! Seeing the crowd engage with John and Ed's mech-building extravaganza was amazing (shout out to Nathan for voicing our mech AI!) and chatting to everyone afterwards was just as great. PAX was also the first time Dreams was playable to the public, so seeing the outside world play our game was simply wonderful!

Molecules' Christmas Dinner

Molecules' Christmas Dinner

As you know, we Molecules like to eat. So, of course, Christmas dinner is a MUST here at Mm Towers. Our ever wonderful Kath and Eoin cooked us the most amazing lunch, just before a bunch of Molecules headed off for their Christmas break! Look at all their lovely faces!

Meet a Molecule

Meet a Molecule

Alex Perry is the Feedback Manager at Media Molecule and she's worked at Square Enix Europe and Rockstar London and then as part of the Molecule QA team for several years before moving into production this year. She also co-founded and runs a London games industry meet-up called Game Rats. She'll be gathering up a ton of information during beta and interacting with you on our forums, so we thought now is the perfect time for you to get to know her!

What do you do on Dreams?
I’m Feedback Manager here at Media Molecule, so I work mainly as part of the production team to gather and organise feedback on Dreams. I also work quite a lot with QA and community as the job has a lot of crossover, so I’m often running around talking to different people and badgering them about things we could do to make Dreams more user friendly. While the game has been in development, a lot of my role has been overseeing user testing and managing the feedback that comes in from Sony’s User Research team, but I’m excited to start gathering feedback directly from our community when Dreams goes live!

What're you looking forward to the CoMmunity doing in Dreams?
I love that Dreams encourages collaboration so I’m pretty hyped to see what weird and wonderful mash-ups people make, it’s a fantastic tool for things like Game Jams so I’m interested to see how people take advantage of that.

What do you like to do in Dreams? Do you have a favourite creation?
I like to make creepy stuff and fat animals. Sometimes in the same creation! In our Halloween stream I showed off my game that involved feeding candy to a fat fox in a witches hat, which I’m pretty proud of. I also made a creepy wooden box with a beating heart in it which worked out well, but the thing I really need to revisit is my original character Dinowizard™ who is a dinosaur that is also a wizard and first appeared in a terrible game I made at university many moons ago - which I remade in Dreams and was super proud of. Unfortunately I made it over a year ago and the puppet system has changed since then so it’s currently broken, but Dinowizard™ still holds a special place in my heart.

Favourite food, movie and song, in that order. GO!
Argh! That’s too difficult! Pizza is my fave food for sure but I have a million favourite movies and songs. Probably either Evil Dead II or Time Bandits (I love me some practical effects) but Thor Ragnarok or Howl’s Moving Castle would be up there too. I feel bad not saying a Prince or David Bowie song as my favourite (fun fact: I have tattoos of both of them) but it would probably be Alex Chilton by The Replacements because that song always makes me happy for some reason.

Finally, what’s your favourite game?
I think I’ve spent more time playing Overwatch than anything else ever, but my favourite of all time is between Okami and We <3 Katamari. I played both back on PS2 and Okami blew my mind with how beautiful it was while Katamari is possibly the most fun I’ve ever had in a game. I also love Night in the Woods so much and recommend it to anyone who will listen as it’s incredibly funny and clever and despite starring anthropomorphic animals in the US is the closest thing to my experience growing up in a small rural ex-mining community I’ve ever seen in a game. So many feels.

CoMmunity Happenings

Fan Art Board

Our final fan-art board of the year is simply wonderful! @NinjaBeam kicks things off with a couple of hand-drawn Imps, while @Alminie has also featured Imps in a lovely Christmas card to the Molecules! Finally, the ever-lovely @EnochRootDreams gifted us some festively themed Mm logos, as well as a recreation of the tree spotted in our show floor demos!

Coming Up!

As we said up top, our public sign-ups for the Dreams Creator Beta will be kicking off on 4th January, and we'll have plenty more details to share during that week. We'll also be streaming that day! Our first stream of 2019 will be on 4th January, 2019 at 5PM GMT. We'll be exploring the Dreamiverse!

And lastly! Happy Christmas and Happy New Year! However you're celebrating, we wish you all of the best and thank you for all of your support of Mm and Dreams. As we barrel towards launching Dreams, your kind words, patience, and enthusiasm make this experience all the richer. See you in 2019!
