Welcome to Mm Monthly for July! This month has been a busy one for ol' Media Molecule. Our big news for the month was that we won the Game Critics Award at E3 for Best Original Game! We are simply thrilled. We also had some more Molecules recognised at the Develop Awards, chatted to the incredible Ted Price and built a boat! What? Well, read on...it's been a busy month...

This Month at Mm HQ

Pride in London

Pride in London

Pride in London is one of the most fantastic events in the city each year, and we were honoured to join our PlayStation family once again to take part in the annual parade supporting LGBT+ culture! We had SO much fun walking through London (which was quite warm) singing and dancing! Roll on Pride 2019.

Guildford Raft Race

Guildford Raft Race

While our Pride Molecules were in London, our intrepid Sailor Molecules took part in the annual Guildford Raft Race! Abbie, Ed, John, Dave C., Pablo and Alex represented Mm on the high-seas in their hand-built Pride raft (huge props to our resident builder, John Beech)! Although the gold escaped our grasp, the team did amazingly well and most importantly, did not sink into the Wey. Special thanks to Dave Smith & Constantin Jupp for their help and Bogdan and Liam for providing water pistol ground support!

Siobhan Chats With Ted Price

Siobhan Chats With Ted Price

Siobhan was featured on The AIAS Game Maker’s Notebook podcast, hosted by Insomniac Games' Ted Price, this month to discuss Dreams, the importance of community, as well as a host of other topics! If you'd like to learn about the fascinating and complex world of running a game studio you can listen to the podcast right here.

G3

G3

Did you know our home city has its own fledgling games conference? Abbie, Ed and Gem popped down to the University of Surrey to attend Guildford's annual games industry event, G3! They demo'ed Dreams to the local Guildford crowd and Gem appeared on a panel titled The Studio of the Future: Diversity! You can find out more about the event, and check out some pictures, right here.

E3 and MORE!

E3 and MORE!

E3 2018 is already a distant memory for some, but we won't forget it any time soon! In wonderful news, Dreams was awarded Best Original Game as part of the Games Critics Awards! One thing that happened there we haven't shown you yet, is Mm's Mark Healey sitting with Concrete Genie's Dominic Robilliard to talk about creative games. If Concrete Genie hasn't appeared on your radar yet RUN, don't walk to learn more about this gorgeous title (that uses just a bit of Dreams tech too!).

Making of the Molecules Livestream

Making of the Molecules Livestream

Speaking of E3, our June stream was focused on how we put together an amazing live performance using Dreams itself! We gathered up some of the Molecules that worked tirelessly to make it happen on the Mm sofa and chatted through how it's made! If you missed it, fear not, here's a link!

Meet A Molecule

Meet A Molecule

Emilie's gorgeous art style can be seen in the community levels Searching and Windy Glades as well as in the sci-fi story content for Dreams. This month we ask her to share some more about herself:

What do you do on Dreams?

I work as an artist on Dreams. More specifically, I’m responsible for a large part of the Sci-Fi theme, which means I get to designs robots and digital forests for a living. Thanks to the tools and the amount of creative freedom I have, it’s hugely fulfilling to be able to sit down and continue to develop on this digital world every day. When I have the time, I also like to do a bit of game design, level layout and animation – if it weren’t for Dreams, I probably would have never discovered these hidden passions of mine.

What're you looking forward to the CoMmunity doing in Dreams?

All the silly stuff! There are way too few weird and silly games out there, and I hope the community can help us fill that gap. I can’t wait to see all the creations that aren’t trying to please the mainstream but are wonderfully of their own peculiar genre!

What do you like to do in Dreams? Do you have a favourite creation?

I like to do a bit of everything. I have a tendency to get bored quite quickly if I do the same thing for too long, so I like to swap between doing sculpting, assembly, game design, animation, lighting and a bit of animation. It makes every day different and helps me keep my creativity going. Jumping around between disciplines can really help clear the mind and invite new ideas through solving problems in many different areas.

Favourite food, movie and song, in that order. GO!

The first two are easy! Peking duck and Spirited Away. As for my favourite song, I tend to have a new one every week. This week, I’m listening a lot to Joga by Bjork.

Finally, what’s your favourite game?

Can I pick 2 please? Because they’re both too amazing to leave one out! Ori and the Blind Forest and Rayman Legends because of their incredible visuals and insanely satisfying mechanics. I don’t think I can ever get enough of these games!

CoMmunity Happenings

Mega Penguin Rises!

Mega Penguin Rises!

During E3, we challenged ourselves to make a game in two days during the show. To do so, we rounded up ideas from our friends at the show as well as you, the CoMmunity. The result? The Adventures of Mega Penguin! The game features our titular hero stranded on the moon, forced to escape and reproduce mini versions of himself. Yep, you read that right! You can check out the full game on our YouTube right here!

Fan Art Board

Our fan art this month kicks off with a BEAUTIFUL depiction of our beloved Lancewing from @the_meep_lord, an interview with our own Catherine Woolley by a student at St Francis Xavier Sixth Form College and finally, a piece of concept art from mad-gfx, a team already developing their ideas for projects in Dreams - before even playing the game! We're super excited to see the final creation!

Next Month at Mm

It's nearly stream time! Our July stream will be taking place on Thursday 26th July at 5PM BST and we'll be gathering up a bunch of Molecules to jam together. Our theme is Gothic Novel, tying in with the lovely team at the Guildford Library and their month-long #GothNovJam event! We've had everyone making their creepiest contributions all month just for this!

And, if you find yourself at DevCom in Cologne, Germany in August, make sure to catch a talk from Siobhan Reddy!

We've got a busy year ahead so be sure to check out the calendar on our website to find out where we'll be, hopefully we'll find ourselves at a games conference near you!
