July 2020 Newsletter
July 2020 Newsletter

Well, July was quite the month for the Dreamiverse, wasn’t it? Kicking off with our first ever DreamsCom and rounding things out by adding VR support to Dreams AND launching a beautiful music video created collaboratively with Noah Cyrus! How cool! DreamsCom was a huge undertaking and it was inspired way back in December by the community meet-up that happened in Guildford, then the DreamWalk set us down a path (heh) of collaborative events that we’re really excited about. We can’t wait to keep putting on cool events and working on projects alongside all of you. And we’re still just soaking up all the cool stuff happening on the VR front in Dreams - it’s brilliant!

As is tradition, your monthly dose of Mm news comes packaged with new wallpapers, a chat with a community member and even a recipe from our very own Kath and Eoin! Read on and enjoy!

Dan Goddard (Munkaay)

Guest Artist: Dan Goddard (Munkaay)

Dan Goddard is one of our fabulous Art Molecules here at Mm (and the brain behind the fabulous IMPYs stage you would've seen at the show!). He was part of the team that created some of the amazing sculptures you may have seen if you've checked out our Inside the Box Gallery in Dreams VR!

We asked Dan about the creative process behind his jaw-dropping crow sculpture, that you can see at the top of this newsletter!

Inside the Box VR in Dreams is such a immersive experience, and I wanted to make a piece for the gallery that gave an unexpected WOW factor, so with the Ravens, the contrasting states was key. My favourite thing to do in Dreams is to sculpt like I paint which is utilising maximum textures. I approached the Ravens the same way by sculpting a basic bird shape using a very thin cube brush and then to get the dark gothic looking state I painted over the top using the paint mode. The bright chrome state is the same sculpture but I manipulated the finish and tint colour during the transition as well as making the decorative metal shapes appear over the top and animate into position while shrinking the paint flecks to invisible with key frames.

The surrounding gallery rocks and other sculptures that are found throughout the inside the box experience are all included inside the box sculpture kit. Each sculpture has a hand painted texture only using the curve brush in sculpt mode.

DreamsCom Wraps-Up

DreamsCom Wraps-Up

The first ever DreamsCom was so much fun, and it was so lovely to see everyone’s reaction to both our livestream showcase and the show-floor - which is still completely playable in Dreams!

Thank you to all our creators who submitted a booth and/or a demo for the show, our showcase creators who put together the amazing trailers seen during our livestream and absolutely everyone who checked out the show! Please enjoy our lovely wrap up video and we’ll see you all at the show next year.

Noah Cyrus x Dreams

Noah Cyrus x Dreams

We’ve always had hopes for Dreams’ incredible possibilities, and this month we saw one of them come to life - working with Sony Music and Noah Cyrus to create a music video for her beautiful single, “July”.

You can read about the process of creating this amazing video straight from Kareem on the Playstation Blog.

August is right around the corner (it may even be here as you’re reading this!) so Kath & Eoin have provided us with the most fantastic and summer-ready recipe if you fancy having a BBQ in your garden - Lemonade Can Chicken!

Check out their recipe, and let us know on Twitter if you cook it yourself

We’ve had a bit too much fun creating GIFs in Dreams, so we thought we’d share them with all of you! Dreams GIFs are now searchable and usable on Twitter and other platforms using GIPHY. The easiest way to find these is by searching ‘dreamsps4’ in the GIF search when you’re after one!

Or you can check them out in all their glory here!

Meet Dreaming-Gaymer

Meet Dreaming-Gaymer

Dreaming-Gaymer has created some truly jaw-dropping creations in Dreams, with their most recent creation, Submerged, catching a lot of eyes at DreamsCom (including ours!). After BADROBO82 nominated DG to answer our questions last month, we’ve been excited to get to know more about this Dreamer!

What do you like to do in the Dreamiverse?
I like to get inspired. Either by playing other's creations or by starting my own creation and seeing where it takes me. Getting my creative juices flowing is what I love most about Dreams. I tend to make things that are very minimalistic, calming and relaxing. I've also dabbled with making cute characters. Also: I LOVE paint mode.

If you could give other members of the CoMmunity a piece of advice for their time in Dreams, what would it be?
Don't be too hard on yourself. I remember that it took me a long time before I created anything, let alone published something. Dreams is supposed to be fun and liberating. Likes/follows/or getting an MM pick is a really nice feeling, but it can also become an obsession. Focus on the fun you're having creating and/or getting wowed by what other people have made. Being "successful" is only a bonus.

What was the first thing you created in Dreams?
I remember that I didn't touch edit mode until the last day of the open beta. It felt very intimidating and I just had to cross that line somehow. I knew that once I broke the ice, it would be much easier. So I just played around with paint, because I love the look of physical paintstrokes that move in the wind. So I made what I called an Alien forest. Just a bunch of paintstrokes, stamped in a sun gadget to get some nice gloomy lighting and placed a camera. I pressed play and stared at it for a long time, as the paintstrokes gently flowed with the wind and some nice MM music played. It was then that I knew that Dreams was very special to me.

Favourite food, movie and song, in that order. GO!
Banana, Mean Girls, My mind by Yebba
