June 2021 Newsletter
June 2021 Newsletter

June has come to an end, and with it an INCREDIBLY busy month at Media Molecule. There is just SO. MUCH. GOING. ON. DreamsCom prep is at the forefront of our minds and thumbs (no spoilers, but you lot have really gone all out on your coMmunity booths and demos this year, and so we’re upping our game right back!). We’ve been getting ready to launch our recently announced Mercedes collaboration, and have put a little extra pep in Dreams’ step with some updates.

Oh - and a very large penguin seems to have crashed his spaceship somewhere in the Dreamiverse. It’s looking like a big clean-up job, even before we start thinking about how to get him back to his home. We can count on you to help us, right?

Theo Hayne

Guest Artist: Theo Hayne

You might recognise the above image from a recent mysterious livestream (which was definitely an excellent use of everybody’s time, we might add). It turns out Theo’s been working his magic once again for Megapenguin Rehatched, our brand-new collaborative community adventure that launched in Dreams... TODAY! Tell us all about it, Theo.

We really wanted to go for a stylised direction that Megapenguin would fit into. Something that would be very modular and easy to assemble, but still quite organic. We used comic sci-fi and bold colours as reference, and mixed that with the classic style of Dreams. It was a lot of fun working out how to get the area to feel alien, but still full of easy-to-digest environment art that would be compelling to explore. For the actual tech for Megapenguin, we loved the idea of keeping it relatively retro, regardless of the level of technology the prop was. An important part of the visual style for our levels was the use of colourful lighting and strong palettes, allowing each level to feel different.

The main thing we want to see is how people create their own personal locations for Megapenguin to explore. We haven’t dictated the art direction, so we’d love to see varied styles and amazing design - that’s what it's all about. As a more specific tip, for art, if you want to make something as polished as you can, focusing on making a small area in a shorter level might help!

DreamsCom ’21 Takes Shape

DreamsCom ’21 Takes Shape

We thought last year’s DreamsCom was wild, but this is next level. You are all blowing our minds this year with the ingenious booths, dazzling trailers, super-slick demos and inventive 15-second elevator pitches! We’re working hard and having a FABULOUS time building the show floor for this year’s expo and organising some exciting coverage of all your creations. Thanks to all of you for making our jobs so much fun - we’ll pay you back with a convention to remember starting July 27th.

Megapenguin Rehatched Is Here!

Megapenguin Rehatched Is Here!

You thought you’d seen your last Megapenguin? Think again. Another pebble-loving hero has arrived in the Dreamiverse with a bang! (In that he literally crashed his eggship into it. Oops.) The first three levels of Megapenguin Rehatched, made by Team Megapenguin here at Mm, are now available to play in Dreams. That’s not all: we want to work with YOU, the coMmunity, to help Megapenguin find his way home. Submit your own levels to guide Megapenguin on his journey, and become part of the adventure!

Mercedes-Benz and Dreams?!

Mercedes-Benz and Dreams?!

When Mercedes-Benz asked us to imagine a possible future with them by using Dreams, we immediately busted out our crystal balls and got to work... Okay, we don’t actually have clairvoyant powers. But we do have the next best thing - the_burgervan! Talented coMmunity creator Scott Vanderburgh has been working with us Molecules and the team at Mercedes to create a stunning adventure platformer that you’ll be able to play in Dreams on July 8th. We’re so excited for you all to experience it - and to show us your own visions of the future in our ‘Imagined Futures’ game jam, starting July 13th!

Artistic Triumphs

Artistic Triumphs

It has been BEYOND inspiring to see you dreamers bagging nominations and winning awards with games you’ve made in Dreams. Not only is Mystical_Vortex_ in the running for a Young Game Designers award from BAFTA for their game The Little Ninja, but HalfUp’s The Snowgardens just scooped the Best Student Game prize at this year’s Freeplay Independent Games Festival. We couldn’t be prouder.

Fly Your Flag!

Fly Your Flag!

Speaking of which: Pride month has been running all throughout June, and orionvalentine and friends have been organising their very own parade in Dreams. It’s shaping up to be fantastic - and it’s not too late to get involved! There’s still a little time left to design a flag, float or decoration to represent your identity and support for the LGBTQ+ community of Dreams. Get creating!

Check out the guidelines on how to get involved with this amazing event: it can be as easy as decorating your very own tent, or as ambitious as performing on the main stage of DreamsFest to an audience of your fellow dreamers. August can’t come soon enough!

Who amongst us hasn’t been helped out by master tutorialiser VinceKully at one point or another? Their videos are a brilliant source of Dreams knowledge and expertise, and their curated toolbelts are mighty handy, too. Now, it’s time to meet the person behind the mind...

What do you like to do in the Dreamiverse?

I think I'd have a shorter answer for what I don't like to do in Dreams, so buckle up, readers. ;) For the sake of brevity, I'll list my favorite past-times.

Logic: Coming from a software development background, with experience from other game engines, Dreams' "programming language" is very different and unique. While it's quick and easy to do some things in Dreams that would take a lot of time and strategising (and so much boilerplate code) in another engine, there are also some things that would be a few lines of code in one engine that ends up taking some real thought and time to create in Dreams. It ends up being a bit of a puzzle game to recreate those types of things in Dreams, which I absolutely adore.

Popular Game Mechanics: I love recreating various game mechanics within Dreams. Whether that be the sucking up of collectables like the bolts (or energy drinks if you're a real gamer) in Ratchet & Clank, creating radial menus like that of DOOM or Returnal, or the dynamic camera from Super Smash Bros, it feels great to figure out a solution, and share those solutions with the Dreams CoMMunity.

Templates/Systems: Since I come from a software development background, one of my favorite things to do is to create reusable systems or templates that are intended to be plug and play, either for a game I'm making, or for anyone else to use. A couple of examples would be this turn-based node, and this cute little controller displayer.

Music: I love making music in Dreams. I've played around with loop pedals in the past, and have played in live bands, but Dreams' powerful music tools have really allowed me to learn so much about music over the past year and a half. Finding the Monday Night Crew (MNC shoutout) only pulled me in even harder. It's so fun to get on and play around with a melody or a chord progression, or a drum beat, that even when the intention is to just make a quick thing, I get carried away and end up making full tracks, which often end up inspiring game ideas.

Making Tutorials: Did I mention I have a YouTube channel filled with tutorials? ;) Teaching is something I didn’t know I enjoyed until I tried making tutorials, and now I can’t get enough! If you could give other members of the CoMmunity a piece of advice for their time in Dreams, what would it be? Rome wasn’t built in a day, and most games take years to develop regardless of team size. While some wizards (*cough* oooDorienooo *cough*) manage to make games in a couple of days, and Dreams is very powerful, don’t become discouraged when creations take time. And I mean a lot of time! The best way to tackle a large problem is to break it up into very small bite-sized pieces. Completing each piece gives a nice sense of accomplishment and helps to prevent burnout. This advice also applies to learning the controls! Don’t give up on them, they’re very powerful. Regular exercise and eating well helps too, but I’m not your mama! You do you! ;)

What was the first thing you created in Dreams?

After purchasing Dreams and slamming through the tutorials in a few days, I saw the community jam theme was “Arcade”, and I was dead-set on joining that community jam. Thus, Arcade Owner Simulator was born! I spent a solid week creating this complete game, and had a blast making it! If you haven’t played it before, it’s a game that falls under the “idle” trope. Your arcade is pretty weak when you start, and at the end, your arcade becomes to go-to spot for the entire town!

Favourite food, movie and song, in that order. GO!

Burritos. The Shawshank Redemption. Any song by Snarky Puppy.
