Meet VinceKully!
Who amongst us hasn’t been helped out by master tutorialiser VinceKully at one point or another? Their videos are a brilliant source of Dreams knowledge and expertise, and their curated toolbelts are mighty handy, too. Now, it’s time to meet the person behind the mind...
What do you like to do in the Dreamiverse?
I think I'd have a shorter answer for what I don't like to do in Dreams, so buckle up, readers. ;) For the sake of brevity, I'll list my favorite past-times.
Logic: Coming from a software development background, with experience from other game engines, Dreams' "programming language" is very different and unique. While it's quick and easy to do some things in Dreams that would take a lot of time and strategising (and so much boilerplate code) in another engine, there are also some things that would be a few lines of code in one engine that ends up taking some real thought and time to create in Dreams. It ends up being a bit of a puzzle game to recreate those types of things in Dreams, which I absolutely adore.
Popular Game Mechanics: I love recreating various game mechanics within Dreams. Whether that be the sucking up of collectables like the bolts (or energy drinks if you're a real gamer) in Ratchet & Clank, creating radial menus like that of DOOM or Returnal, or the dynamic camera from Super Smash Bros, it feels great to figure out a solution, and share those solutions with the Dreams CoMMunity.
Templates/Systems: Since I come from a software development background, one of my favorite things to do is to create reusable systems or templates that are intended to be plug and play, either for a game I'm making, or for anyone else to use. A couple of examples would be this turn-based node, and this cute little controller displayer.
Music: I love making music in Dreams. I've played around with loop pedals in the past, and have played in live bands, but Dreams' powerful music tools have really allowed me to learn so much about music over the past year and a half. Finding the Monday Night Crew (MNC shoutout) only pulled me in even harder. It's so fun to get on and play around with a melody or a chord progression, or a drum beat, that even when the intention is to just make a quick thing, I get carried away and end up making full tracks, which often end up inspiring game ideas.
Making Tutorials: Did I mention I have a YouTube channel filled with tutorials? ;) Teaching is something I didn’t know I enjoyed until I tried making tutorials, and now I can’t get enough! If you could give other members of the CoMmunity a piece of advice for their time in Dreams, what would it be? Rome wasn’t built in a day, and most games take years to develop regardless of team size. While some wizards (*cough* oooDorienooo *cough*) manage to make games in a couple of days, and Dreams is very powerful, don’t become discouraged when creations take time. And I mean a lot of time! The best way to tackle a large problem is to break it up into very small bite-sized pieces. Completing each piece gives a nice sense of accomplishment and helps to prevent burnout. This advice also applies to learning the controls! Don’t give up on them, they’re very powerful. Regular exercise and eating well helps too, but I’m not your mama! You do you! ;)
What was the first thing you created in Dreams?
After purchasing Dreams and slamming through the tutorials in a few days, I saw the community jam theme was “Arcade”, and I was dead-set on joining that community jam. Thus, Arcade Owner Simulator was born! I spent a solid week creating this complete game, and had a blast making it! If you haven’t played it before, it’s a game that falls under the “idle” trope. Your arcade is pretty weak when you start, and at the end, your arcade becomes to go-to spot for the entire town!
Favourite food, movie and song, in that order. GO!
Burritos. The Shawshank Redemption. Any song by Snarky Puppy.
