May 2020 Newsletter

And there goes May! It doesn’t seem too long since we were writing April’s Mm Monthly - we’re probably even wearing the same pair of pajamas, let’s be honest. But we’re adjusting to our new, remote settings and work on all our upcoming Dreams updates continues! We’ve seen some absolutely jaw-dropping creations brought to life in Dreams too...and we’ve replaced sharing them our big TV in the middle of the office with checking them out in our online team meetings.

We’ve also been inspired by the slew of community led projects to think about more ways to bring people together in Dreams and some not insignificant future projects of our own...READ ON (you inspiring lot, you)!

Guest Artist:

SootyPinions’ work in Dreams is always breathtaking, with gorgeous depictions of nature...they’re just the soothing landscapes we all need right now. Gold Strand wowed us on one of our most recent streams, so we caught up with SootyPinions to find out a little more about their creative processes:

Gold strand was created for #DreamMay's word of the day and as with most of what I make I had only a very loose concept in mind. I think my main goal is always make it pretty and just allow happy accidents to take care of the rest. I'm not a particularly creative person outside of Dreams, I've no artistic background, so Dreams has been a revelation for me and an outlet I never thought I'd have, so seeing my creations used and liked by the community is amazing and incredibly motivating.

I like to make Dreams that people can escape into and create stories for. That's why I tend to make my work remixable, so it can be taken apart to understand how everything fits, a way of learning I myself depend on, and so others can create scenes for themselves, just as Dreams and its community has done for me!

Our Latest Updates

Our Latest Updates

May saw us release updates for Dreams and indreams.me! Dreams’ 2.11 patch added the Welcome Garden Gameplay Pack to our Welcome Garden kit, as well as an ‘irrelevant’ tagging system to our Community Jams to improve the voting process as requested. On the web, indreams 2.05 introduced a live player count, award badges and more to the site. One super cool change is the ability to see who streamed your content!

You can see 2.11 patch notes here, and check out indreams 2.05 patch notes here.

John's Train Stream

Our very lovely John Beech came back to the Mm Twitch channel this month with an amazing look at his personal in-Dreams project - a toy train set! As you can imagine, the stream was FULL of top tips and some brilliant showcases of getting the most out of your creation.

We compiled a list of some of John's biggest OMG moments on Twitter, and you can check out the full stream here.

CoMmunity Happenings

LadyLexUK’s Song Contest

LadyLexUK’s Song Contest

May saw LadyLexUK’s amazing Dreams Song Contest come to a close, with some absolutely brilliant music being entered. It really did fill the Eurovision-shaped hole in our hearts, and it was amazing to see so many creators take part. You can check out Lex’s full show here.

The Song Contest was part of our ongoing #DreamsTogether activity, where we’re rounding up collaborative projects going on in Dreams in the hope of bringing together the Dreamiverse in a way we can’t do in person right now. If you want information on current projects, head here. And if you have a project you’d like included, let us know on Twitter!

Meet the CoMmunity - Martinitydk

Meet the CoMmunity - Martinitydk

If you’re active in the Dreamiverse, it’s very likely that you’ve seen Martin’s work - his vast array of gorgeous landscapes and beautiful concepts wow Dreamers on the regular (and those outside of Dreams, too!). Nominated by Hemlawk last month, we’ve asked Martin our usual questions to get to know a bit more about him!

What do you like to do in the Dreamiverse?
To me Dreams and the Dreamiverse basically feels like I’m 7 years old, and got the keys to the toy store and the factory that makes all the toys. It’s an incredible creative playground where only your ambitions and skills seem to limit what is possible. The tool is versatile enough so that it feels like almost anything can be made with the right mindset and dedication.

My main area of interest in Dreams is on the visual side, and from the beginning of my Dreams journey I was interested in seeing if I could use Dreams in my professional work as an illustrator. I’ve been making a living doing art for something like 17 years and have never seen asoftware as promising and impressive as Dreams. But Dreams has also encouraged me to explore areas like animation and logic which I’m slowly starting to get a better understanding off. I even started trying to learn to play the piano to be better at making music in Dreams.

If you could give other members of the CoMmunity a piece of advice for their time in Dreams, what would it be?
Go through all of the tutorials! I cannot say this enough, it’s really important to get a feel for Dreams. It is a complex tool set, but the tutorials make it a bit less daunting to make your first creation. Use social media to connect to other Dreamers, the Dreams community is incredibly friendly and helpful.

Also make sure not to be overly ambitious on your very first creations. Start out small with something like a rock or maybe a tree and then build worlds after that.

What was the first thing you created in Dreams?
A field of grass and a distant trees and mountains.. what a Martin thing to do!

Favourite food, movie and song, in that order. GO!
A good chili con carne,Lord of the Rings, “The Scientist” by Coldplay or some vocal trancewhich is greatto get me into that meditative state where I forget time and space while I’m working in Dreams!

Thanks for chatting to us this month, Martin! Next month, Martin's asked us to chat to BADROBO82 and we can't wait!
