Meet TheOneironaut!
If you’ve come across dancing zombies in the Dreamiverse, chances are it’s RADICAL - and TheOneironaut is the mastermind behind that particular #MadeInDreams gem. Since then, their work has continued to amaze us, with their upcoming project komorebi blew us away at DreamsCom! Get to know them a little bit better with the below interview!
What do you like to do in the Dreamiverse? I love creating characters and bringing inner worlds to life. I love environmental storytelling and mystery, exploration, and inspiring moods through visuals and sounds. I’m extremely excited to get my hands on VR one of these days, because that’s when I think you’ll really see me explode with content because I just want to step into every painting or drawing I’ve ever seen or made. I’ve had limited time over the past few years to spend on gaming due to some life transitions, but when I jump into Dreams I like to create something immersive and surprising, silly, or just something I haven’t seen before. Lately, I’ve been working on some music projects in the background, and once I get all of that mixed and animated properly I’ll be excited to share! There… may be some familiar undead friends involved...
If you could give other members of the CoMmunity a piece of advice for their time in Dreams, what would it be? Experiment with everything, even gadgets you don’t think you’re interested in using, do tutorials, watch YouTube videos, follow other Dreamers on social media, watch streams, play other games and try to break down and reproduce the things you love. And when you decide to create or publish something, make it *for yourself* to the point that you could get 0 likes and still be content. Make something YOU want to see. There’s no perfect path, but I think you’ll find your own if you give yourself simple goals and try to solve them. Don’t try to create some open world RPG right away. Instead, make a button that triggers something, attach emitters to things and see what happens, try to reproduce special effects you’ve seen, build a location you’d like to visit. I’ve been really excited to watch people discover their own personal styles. Do a little bit of everything. Dreams has so much freedom that it can be overwhelming at first, so you sorta have to try a little bit of everything until you find what you really love to create.
What was the first thing you created in Dreams? I think it was actually a blob of icing for my Gingerbread Cottage during the Beta, but that was a fantastic first project because it brought back so many memories of assembling real gingerbread houses and making them look handmade, with falling shredded coconut snow, and candy-cane lamp posts lighting the scene. And of course starring “Melly" a living marshmallow with pretzel stick limbs jammed into its delicious, marshmallowy body. I was really going for “inner child” there and yeah, Dreams brings that out almost every time, as long as you remember to PLAY and not worry so much about perfectionism. Admittedly, I went right from that to my most intense jam session the week leading up to New Years Day to release Starry Night… which I can’t wait to release in VR someday!
Favourite food, movie and song, in that order. GO! Favorite food—homemade pizza or maybe chicken parm… or… dakgangjeong and japchae (go watch some Maangchi and get addicted to making Korean food!)
Favorite movie—My heart lives in quirky, campy, supernatural things full of personality, mostly from the 80s and 90s. My favorite movies vary depending on my mood, but I think a safe choice will always be Pan’s Labyrinth… or Interview with the Vampire... or Return of the Living Dead. haha — Don’t make me choose! Just give me personality.
Song? — “shadowshow” or “; john” or “y” by iamamiwhoami
How can people find you in the Dreamiverse? TheOneironaut, pronounced “The O-Narrow-Not” or “The O-Nigh-Row-Not” — it means “dream voyager”
